Mel Kiper Jr. has Cowboys making this first-round mistake

Daltons are interchangeable parts for the Dallas Cowboys in Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft.

Mel Kiper Jr. has the Dallas Cowboys making another huge mistake in his latest NFL mock draft.

We have already discussed how the Cowboys are the NFL‘s living, breathing version of Arrested Development. Huzzah! I mean, we all loved that show, just like we love America’s Team. However, Kiper has to be absolutely joshing us big time with who he has going to the Cowboys this spring.

After presumably losing tight end Dalton Schultz in free agency, because he is not getting tagged again, Kiper has Dallas drafting another tight end named Dalton in the first round. Dalton Kincaid was an excellent player for Kyle Whittingham’s Utah Utes, but you only take a tight in the first round if you think he can be a future hall of famer, someone like a Kyle Pitts or a T.J. Hockenson.

The fly not only fell into the ointment, but it has somehow found its way into the pumpkin pie, too.

“I’ve made a huge mistake.”

Look. There is nothing wrong with drafting Kincaid. He thrived at Utah, which is a lesser version of Michigan, which is a lesser version of Georgia. So if you’re all about the Utes, then by all means, take him! However, you cannot shove a square peg into a round hole, even if the two players in question share the same given name and played the same offensive position over in the Pac-12.

Drafting Kincaid to offset losing Schultz is like breaking into your friend’s apartment, replacing all of his items with exact replicas and hoping he can’t tell the difference. He may have been dumb to give you his keys to his place in the first place, but he did trust you, so never forget that. For years, we have trusted Kiper’s gospel in the mock draft evaluation process. Guess who’s holding the pie?

In truth, who knows what the Cowboys are going to do, honestly? They may draft Ezekiel Elliott’s replacement in Bijan Robinson when they already have Tony Pollard at home. Did you think they were going to draft an offensive lineman out of Tulsa? No, but Jerry Jones had the draft board to prove it. Let’s just hope they get a superstar in the making like a CeeDee Lamb or a Micah Parsons.

Forget me now, but I think if the Cowboys can have a fantastic draft, they can win the NFC East.
