Redshirt senior quarterback Spencer Rattler has been leading the South Carolina Gamecocks this year. With the team sitting at 2-5 heading into a matchup with Texas A&M, he has passed for 1,941 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Rattler is in his second season with the Gamecocks, having transferred from Oklahoma in 2021. During his time at Oklahoma, he passed for 4,595 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His decision to transfer came after being benched in favor of Caleb Williams, the current starting quarterback for the USC Trojans. His benching came during the fourth game of the season against Texas.
With the Sooners, he was once a potential candidate for the first overall selection in the NFL Draft. However, one of the biggest questions during his career has been about his appearance.
What Is Spencer Rattler’s Ethnicity?
Rattler was born September 28, 2000, to Michael and Susan Rattler. His parents shared that Rattler is half-white, half-African-American.
His father, also known as Mike, has been reported to be a regional sales rep. His mother is a teacher. Rattler also has a younger sister, Olivia, who plays beach volleyball for Missouri State.

His father has been said to have never missed a game or practice of Rattler’s. His father has also been reportedly handling Rattler’s NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) interviews so he could focus on just football.
Before college football, Rattler had already created a name for himself. He was featured on the third season of the Netflix Series ‘QB1: Beyond the Lights’ alongside Lance Legendre and Nik Scalzo.
He attended Pinnacle High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where he threw for an Arizona state record of 11,083 yards and 116 touchdowns in his career. He also ran for over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns. His team won two straight conference titles under his lead.
He was a five-star prospect, according to 247Sports, and was the ninth overall player. He was the consensus top quarterback in the class of 2019. He also won the Elite 11 Finals MVP.
Rattler, once touted as a first-overall-pick candidate, is still on the path to being drafted. With five games left on the schedule, he still has a chance to make himself a household name.
