Utah State 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Reports

Alfred Edwards, OT

Strengths: Five-year starter at left tackle who played 53 games with the first team. Patient, quickly sets up in pass protection, and stays square. Explosive at the point, does enough to turn defenders from the line of scrimmage, and keeps his feet moving. Sets with a wide base and works to bend his knees. Gets his hands into defenders and rides them from their angles of attack.

Weaknesses: Doesn’t play with consistent pad level. Heavy-footed and isn’t quick to the second level. Rarely finishes blocks.

Overall: Edwards is a size prospect who gets the most from his ability and was durable at Utah State. More than anything else, Edwards must improve his techniques and blocking fundamentals to make it out of camp this summer.

Calvin Tyler Jr., RB

Strengths: Productive ball carrier who began his college career at Oregon State. Extremely quick-footed, easily bounces around piles of defenders, and creates yardage. Keeps his feet moving, falls forward when tackled, and works runs. Waits for blocks to develop and shows good vision.

Weaknesses: Really doesn’t display a lot of power and is easily brought down by the initial defender. Lacks the speed to run to daylight. Average pass-catching production.

Overall: Tyler is a quick-footed runner with the ability to create yardage. He offers potential as a third-down back if he improves his pass-catching skill.

Chandler Dolphin, C

Strengths: Explosive small-area blocker who started for two years. Fires off the snap, quickly gets into blocks, and stays square. Strong, easily turns defenders from the line or controls them at the point. Effective with the shotgun snap. Effectively quarterbacks the offensive line. Nasty and always looking for someone to hit.

Weaknesses: Average athlete and minimally effective on the move. Possesses short arms.

Overall: Dolphin really improved last year and comes with size, growth potential, and great football intellect. He’s a nasty blocker with next-level potential, but he needs to fill out his frame.

Hunter Reynolds, S

Strengths: Instinctive run-defending safety with excellent length. Plays heads-up football, keeps the action in front of him, and quickly diagnoses plays. Works hard, gives effort, and takes proper angles. Quickly closes to the action and does a solid job in coverage.

Weaknesses: Lacks lateral range and speed. Not a strong open-field tackler. Struggles to stay on the receiver’s hip out of breaks.

Overall: Reynolds was a productive two-year starter at Utah State after transferring from Michigan. He’s a zone safety with limited speed who is best playing downhill.
