When Is the NFL’s 53-Man Roster Cut Deadline?

In 2023, the NFL’s 53-man roster cut deadline is Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. ET. By that time, every franchise must reduce their roster from 90 players — the maximum allowed during the summer — to 53.

Teams are free to cut players throughout training camp and the preseason if they choose. Some clubs have already begun to part ways with some players, while more teams could take action this weekend. But every squad has to meet the NFL’s roster requirement by Aug. 29.

What Happens After NFL Teams Make Their Final Roster Cuts?

Just because a player makes it through those final roster cuts doesn’t mean their situation is necessarily safe. Teams then have 24 hours to make waiver claims on players who have been waived.

If they are successful with any of their claims, they will have to make a corresponding move to remain at the roster limit of 53. The waiver order is based on 2022 records.

When Can Teams Sign Players to Practice Squads?

The 48-72 hours after 53-man rosters are finalized will be very hectic for NFL teams and players alike. Any players who pass through the 24-hour waivers can then be signed to practice squads.

This is where teams have to take a calculated gamble. If they want a player on their practice squad, they have to cut him and risk another NFL team claiming him.

How Much Does a Player on the Practice Squad Make?

Players who do not make the team’s initial 53-man roster can be brought back on a team’s practice squad. The NFL allows for 14 additional players to be on a team’s practice squad, giving the team more players for practice, and those players can be pulled up on game day if needed due to injury or other circumstances.

Practice squad players are paid differently, and as a result, they do not get a yearly salary. They are paid based on their being on the practice squad week to week, with a base salary of $11,500 a week to do so.

If a player spends the entire 18-week season on the practice squad, they will take home $207,000 for the year.

If a player was brought up to the active roster for a game, he would be paid for his service on the 53-man roster that week rather than his usual practice squad rate. He would get the league minimum salary of $750,000 broken down to a one-week installment which would pay out anywhere from $41,666 to $52,222, depending on the player’s tenure in the league.
