How Many Draft Picks Do the Texans Have in 2023?

As of now, the Texans have 12 draft selections in the 2023 NFL Draft — almost twice the standard amount of picks. They have all the ammunition they need to add another game-changing rookie class. The 2022 cohort brought in high-level playmakers like Jalen Pitre and Derek Stingley Jr.

Interestingly, nearly half of the Texans’ draft selections reside in Round 6. The Texans have league-leading four sixth-round selections — picks they mainly acquired via trade (Charles Omenihu, Bradley Roby, Keion Crossen, and Ross Blacklock). It’s unclear which pick they moved to the Jets for linebacker Blake Cashman, though.

The Texans added an additional fifth-rounder from the Dallas Cowboys for WR Brandin Cooks.

Those sixth-rounders may give the Texans an opportunity to add coveted roster depth and strike gold late in the 2023 NFL Draft. But the team’s selections in the early rounds are most important. Luckily, Houston is well-stocked there as well.

Houston has the second overall pick in the draft. With that pick, they’ll be able to add their choice of the 2023 quarterbacks — with Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis all garnering consideration.

On top of the second pick, the Texans also have the 12th overall pick. They earned this pick, along with their second third-rounder, by dealing QB Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns in the 2022 offseason.

All told, the Texans have six selections within the top 100 picks. They have two in Round 1, one in Round 2, two in Round 3, and one at the top of Round 4. That allotment of picks should allow the Texans to both add a franchise QB, as well as insulate the core of talent around him.

The team forfeited their original fifth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft and have been fined $175,000 for a salary cap reporting violation.
