Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers announced his intent to play for the New York Jets. How close is he to getting traded?
Since the end of the 2022 season, the NFL world was awaiting a decision from Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Did he want to remain with the team that drafted him in 2005? Did he want to play elsewhere? Did he want to retire?
Well, on March 15, Rodgers made an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” and revealed that he intends to play for the New York Jets. While it felt like it was a done deal, that actually isn’t the case. The Jets and Packers still have to negotiate a trade, and they have yet to reach an agreement.
So, is Rodgers actually going to get traded to the Jets?
Will Aaron Rodgers get traded to the Jets?
The answer to that is — yes, Rodgers is going to get traded to the Jets. It’s a matter of the Jets and Packers reaching an agreement.
There was talk that Green Bay and New York were nowhere near an agreement for a contract in the past few days. The Jets do not want to part ways with their 13th-overall pick in the NFL Draft, considering how many Pro Bowl players have been selected at that position. The Packers, giving away Rodgers, want as much in return as possible.
But this week, Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson reported that the Jets and Packers have gotten closer to an agreement on a trade. Per Robinson, the Jets would trade a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick to the Packers in exchange for Rodgers. However, the Jets are seeking a 2025 draft pick if Rodgers ends up retiring after the 2023 season.
Rodgers has spoken publicly about retirement over the years. From after he signed a massive contract extension with the Packers in the 2022 league year, to saying that he was “90 percent” leaning towards retirement when entering his “darkness retreat.”
So, a Rodgers trade to the Jets has reportedly gotten closer to happening. However, there is one more hurdle remaining before the trade becomes official.
