After pulling off an upset against the Denver Broncos and Russell Wilson, Geno Smith dropped the quote of the year.
It was supposed to be Russell Wilson’s homecoming. Instead, it’s Geno Smith and the Seahawks who got the last laugh and the last word.
After Seattle knocked off Denver 17-16, Smith was interviewed by ESPN’s Lisa Salters and dropped the best quote of 2022.
“They wrote me off, I ain’t write back though.”
Wood. That alone deserves a standing ovation, a round of applause, a tip of the cap, whatever you want to do to praise Geno Smith; this was his moment and night. Moreover, it’s a great night for the Seattle Seahawks.
Picked by many to be a complete rebuilding team this year, Seattle came out and punched Denver in the mouth, and Geno Smith, for much of the game and much to Shannon Sharpe’s chagrin, wheeled and dealt the ball to his receivers like he was Patrick Mahomes.
Geno Smith got the last laugh and delivered the mic-drop quote of the year.
Though Russell Wilson threw for 340 yards, the lack of offensive efficiency, specifically near the goal line, returned to haunt the Broncos. In contrast, though Geno Smith only threw for 195 yards, he did have two impressive touchdown throws.
While many will criticize Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett for playing too conservatively, can we not give some credit to Pete Carroll for molding his guys into a resilient bunch when many predicted them to roll over and let the Mile High City celebrate in the Pacific Northwest?
That said, at least for now, Geno Smith deserves his credit, even from his harshest critics. If nothing else, he dropped the best quote of the NFL season so far. Yes, he was written off, but now he has plenty to write back about, and doing it against the quarterback he replaced? That’s a lot of material to work with.
