Geno Smith continues putting past cries for Russell Wilson, Baker Mayfield to shame

Geno Smith has proved his doubters wrong, as he has been phenomenal as the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks.

The Seattle Seahawks moved on from Russell Wilson this past offseason, trading him to the Denver Broncos. In that moment, many onlookers from around the NFL landscape believed the Seahawks faced a dire quarterback crisis. There were persistent rumors over the summer that the team was interested in trading for Baker Mayfield, but a deal between Cleveland and Seattle never materialized.

Without Mayfield, the Seahawks were left with former Broncos quarterback Drew Lock and former Seahawks backup quarterback Geno Smith. Fans and media alike were not exactly confident in the quarterback battle between Lock and Smith throughout the preseason. Smith won the job, and since then, he has silenced his critics.

In Week 4, Smith helped lead the Seahawks to a 48-45 win over the Detroit Lions after throwing for 320 yards and two touchdowns while completing 23-of-30 pass attempts. Smith also ran for 49 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

As a result of Smith’s latest game, he was named the NFC Player of Week 4.

While being named player of the week is nice and all, Smith also made NFL history in Week 4.

Geno Smith makes history after first four weeks as Seahawks starting QB

Through the first four weeks of the season, Smith has completed 77.3 percent of his passes, which is the highest completion percentage through the first four games in NFL history.

Last year, Smith got three starts at quarterback after Wilson suffered a finger injury. Smith threw for 571 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions while completing 55-of-78 pass attempts.  The team did go 1-2 in that stretch, with the one win coming against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This year, Smith led the Seahawks to a 2-2 start. The season got off to a successful start after Smith defeated Wilson and the Broncos 17-16. After the game, that was when Smith dropped the epic quote of “they wrote me off, I ain’t write back though.”

Smith was written off heading into the 2022 season, and he has proved doubters wrong with his strong start.
