Fantasy Outlook, Value, Projections, and Rankings

As we inch toward the new season, the ever-changing NFL landscape has player fantasy values constantly on the move. Whether you’re used to the dynasty platform or are still learning the rules, let’s dive into the latest dynasty value of Jimmy Garoppolo.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s Dynasty Outlook and Value

We are now over 365 days into the “Jimmy Garoppolo is getting traded” saga. Somehow, in a quarterback-starved league, the 49ers were unable to find a suitable deal for Jimmy G last year. Well, now they don’t have to.

Garoppolo is a free agent, and given Brock Purdy’s emergence, the 49ers are set with him and Trey Lance. They won’t be re-signing Garoppolo to another one-year deal. He is going to sign elsewhere. The important question is where.

Garoppolo has never been and will never be an elite fantasy quarterback. But he’s always been startable in the right spots.

Since 2017, Garoppolo has averaged between 15.3 and 16.0 fantasy points per game in every year except his six-game 2020 season, where he averaged a paltry 11.6 ppg.

There are not 32 quarterbacks better than Garoppolo. There probably aren’t even 22. Garoppolo will start this year. That gives him immediate value in Superflex leagues. But in single-quarterback leagues, Garoppolo cannot be your QB1. What he can be is the ideal backup. If your starting quarterback goes down, Garoppolo can step in and not lose your matchups. He just won’t win them, either.

The primary concern with Garoppolo is we’ve only ever seen him play in the most ideal of circumstances. He started his career backing up Tom Brady in New England. Since then, he’s only played in the 49ers’ QB-friendly offensive system.

Will Garoppolo land on a team with a savvy head coach? Will the team have weapons he can work with? The good news is we know the list of potential landing spots. The bad news is some of them would be devastating for his fantasy value.

The most likely landing spot for Garoppolo is on a team that’s a quarterback away from contending for a championship.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s Fantasy Ranking

We have Garoppolo ranked as if he’s going to start this season. He’s QB29, No. 134 overall in our latest dynasty Superflex rankings.

Given that Garoppolo’s ceiling is as a mid-QB2, fantasy managers need not aggressively pursue him. If you have Garoppolo, great, you’ve got a viable backup for your fantasy team. If not, don’t sweat it, as Garoppolo doesn’t move the needle anyway.

My only real interest in Garoppolo would be as my QB3 if I waited extra long in a dynasty startup draft.
