The Pittsburgh Steelers come into the 2022 season with big changes on offense but what will the results be on the field? We have some bold predictions.

Ben Roethlisberger‘s retirement might’ve been due given the quarterback’s performance on the field, but it’s impossible to deny that the Pittsburgh Steelers are entering somewhat unfamiliar territory under head coach Mike Tomlin as they venture into the 2022 season.

The franchise drafted the assumed Big Ben replacement in the first round with the selection of Kenny Pickett out of Pitt. They also signed former No. 2 pick Mitch Trubisky to help the cause. This defense remains impressive, as do the skill position players, but there are holes at linebacker and, more notably, on the offensive line to pair with the quarterback uncertainty.

So what will this season look like in the Steel City? Rather than keep things tame, let’s get bold as we make some predictions for the Steelers in the 2022 season.

3. Steelers bold prediction: Kenny Pickett starts most games at QB

It’s been a heated competition in the preseason between rookie Kenny Pickett, Trubisky, and veteran former third-rounder Mason Rudolph for the starting quarterback job. Over the past couple of weeks, it’s looked as if it’s a two-man race between Pickett and Trubisky as the team is reportedly exploring a potential trade with Rudolph.

While the starter hasn’t yet been announced, the safe money is on Trubisky being the starter for Week 1. Even if his time in Chicago was much maligned, the fact of the matter is that his veteran experience combined with his mobility should put the Steelers in the best position to win right out of the gate as Pickett learns the ropes.

But the truth of the matter is that we know what Trubisky is and, while he has physical tools, the ultimate results just haven’t been there for him. And if that starts to happen in Pittsburgh, the calls for Pickett to take the starting job are going to be too loud for Tomlin or anyone to ignore.

As such, the rookie will take over as QB1 at some point around the quarter-mark of the regular season and won’t relinquish the job. Make no mistake, that decision won’t eliminate any growing pains and the results will almost surely be varied to a wide degree. With that said, the team will start to usher in the future at the position sooner rather than later.
