Will Cowboys QB Miss Week 1?

In a scary turn of events earlier this week, Dak Prescott left practice early with an ankle injury. How is the injury expected to affect his availability, and should Dallas Cowboys fans or fantasy football managers be nervous about Prescott going forward?

What is the level of concern surrounding Dak Prescott’s ankle injury?

The Cowboys are counting on Prescott to elevate an offense that lost several key playmakers this offseason. Top wideout Amari Cooper was traded to Cleveland, and reliable pass catcher Cedrick Wilson departed for Miami. Now, with a depleted, albeit still talented, supporting cast, Prescott will be needed more than ever to keep the offense humming.

Following Prescott’s early exit from practice on Thursday, Cowboys fans and fantasy managers alike were holding their breath as we awaited an update on the star quarterback’s status. Fortunately, Prescott was able to return to the practice field the following day. Speaking with 105.3 The Fan on Friday, Dallas owner Jerry Jones explained, “I think he had some discomfort, but it was checked out thoroughly in every way that you can and no issues.”

It turns out an issue with Prescott’s cleats caused the problem. Prescott told reporters on Friday that he switched cleats and tried a pair of Jordan 11s in practice which caused some discomfort in his surgically repaired ankle. “Just being very, very precautious. Switched shoes today, probably wasn’t the best idea. We’re good to go. Promise that,” he affirmed.

The team’s official injury report lists Prescott as a full participant in Friday’s practice, and he’s without an injury designation heading into the team’s Week 1 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Barring any further shoe-related problems, Prescott should be all systems go as the season commences.
