After the successful Manti Te’o special, Netflix has teased a Johnny Manziel documentary.
With the overwhelming success coming from the Manti Te’o special, Netflix put out a teaser on Twitter, hinting that a Johnny Manziel documentary is in the making for sports fans everywhere.
While Te’o was the best defensive player on the national runner-up during the 2012 college football season, his catfishing story is what truly made the former Notre Dame linebacker a household name. It largely derailed his once-promising NFL career. As fate would have it, he finished as runner-up for the Heisman Trophy that same season to Manziel, whose career also went awry.
Here is the tweet Netflix sent out, signaling that a Johnny Football documentary is in the works.

The 2012 Texas A&M Aggies may not have been as good as the 2012 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but it was an extra special season for Gig Em Nation, nonetheless, as it was their first year playing in the SEC. After a narrow opening weekend loss at home to Florida, Texas A&M finished the season 11-2, including an upset win over the eventual national champions: The Alabama Crimson Tide.
This was the game where the redshirt freshman quarterback made his mark. His bobble-turned-touchdown-pass was the unforgettable play from the Aggies’ upset victory over the Crimson Tide. Texas A&M finished No. 5 in the country that year with Manziel becoming the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy. After that is when everything started to unravel for Johnny Football.
While he had great success as a redshirt sophomore, off-the-field concerns led to him washing out of the NFL after only two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Substance abuse and other circumstances had Manziel’s football career seemingly end before it even really began. His rise to prominence and then fall from grace was unlike anything we have ever seen from a college star.
It will be hard to top the Te’o documentary, but the entire Manziel story is one that has to be told.
