Move Over Tom Brady? NFL Legend Joe Montana Surprisingly Praises Dan Marino as Best All-Time

There was a time when many NFL fans and analysts believed that Tom Brady became the closest thing to legend Joe Montana.

But even with an NFL record seven Super Bowl titles, Montana doesn’t believe Brady is the best of all time.

Who Does Montana Think Is Better Than Brady?

Speaking with Men’s Health Magazine on Wednesday, Montana calls Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino the best QB of all time…over everyone including himself and Brady.

“Put Marino into today’s game where he gets free release…and his receivers, holy cow, weren’t very big. Now these guys [receivers] are 6’4, 6’5. I think [Marino] is probably one of the most unsung heroes of the game,” Montana said.

The four-time Super Bowl winner, who won all of his Vince Lombardi Trophies with the San Francisco 49ers, believes that Marino deserves more respect.

“People don’t talk enough about him or realize the numbers that he put up during the times that he put them up,” Montana said.

Does Montana Believe Marino Had the Best QB Mechanics?

Marino came into a league and decade that was dominated by Montana and the 49ers. Unfortunately, Marino’s bid at a Super Bowl title was dismantled at the hands of the Niners in the 1984 season — Marino’s second season in the league.

But mechanics-wise, was Marino better than everyone else at the time? Even Montana’s? The legendary QB even admitted that Marino had one trait that placed him ahead of everyone else.

“He had a quick release,” Montana said. “I had to step into a lot of things to get enough [force] on the ball.”

And even with the quick release, Marino’s pass never fluttered. It was always a lasered spiral.

“He had the perfect torque of his upper body and strength to deliver the ball quickly at a fast release with accuracy,” Montana said.

Montana has placed Marino on the pedestal of best QB ever — ahead of Brady and even himself. But who does he believe could potentially pass Marino? That would be two-time Super Bowl champion for the Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes.

“The things he does and is able to do are so different than what any other quarterback does who’s out there,” Montana said.

Marino is unfortunately 0-1 all-time in Super Bowls. But, the Hall of Famer is No. 1 in the mind of Montana.
