Kellen Moore working to steal free agent from Cowboys

Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore could steal a huge free agent away from the Dallas Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys have made some changes to their offense, notably moving on from offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. It didn’t take long for Moore to find another gig in the NFL. After all, he was a head coaching candidate the past two years. Ultimately, he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers to be their new offensive coordinator.

Could Moore be working to steal away a prominent Cowboys free agent?

According to theScore insider Jordan Schultz, the Chargers are among the teams that are interested in former Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz. The NFL insider notes that Schultz has a connection with Moore, but so far the price has been “too high.”

As of this writing, there hasn’t been much movement on the tight end front in free agency, other than Hayden Hurst agreeing to a three-year, $21.75 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. Schultz is probably the best tight end available right now, and it’s really a matter of who wants to sign him.

Spotrac lists Schultz’s market value at a $15.1 million annual average salary.

Last offseason, Dallas placed the franchise tag on Schultz, which paid him $10.9 million for the 2022 campaign. That happened after a 2021 season in which he caught 78-of-104 targets for 808 yards and eight touchdowns.

In 2022, Schultz caught 57 passes for 577 yards and five touchdowns on 89 targets through 15 regular season games. In Dallas’ two playoff games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Francisco 49ers, Schultz recorded 12 receptions for 122 yards and three touchdowns on 18 targets.

Will the Chargers and Moore sign Schultz? Or will it be another NFL team that is able to secure him on a long-term deal?
