Cam Akers talks why Rams can repeat, wild FSU-LSU finish

Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers spoke to FanSided on Monday, and explained how anxious he was watching Florida State beat LSU.

It’s easier to play than watch. At least most players will tell you that.

Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers is no exception. The third-year back who hails from Florida State watched his Seminoles take on the LSU Tigers in the Superdome on Sunday night, with the action coming down to the final play. Leading 24-17, Florida State allowed LSU to drive 99 yards for the apparent game-tying touchdown in the final seconds, only for the Seminoles to miraculously block the extra point.

For Akers, the anxiety of the final minutes was almost too much, before being replaced by elation.

“My anxiety was on 10,” Akers said. “I felt like I was about to have a heart attack. I knew we were going to win, but after the touchdown I kind of had a setback, or a relapse (to) last year when I thought we were going to win a few games, but my Notes pulled it out, man.”

Cam Akers talks Rams’ repeat quest, wild Florida State win

Akers, who spoke to FanSided’s Matt Verderame on the Stacking The Box Podcast as part of a campaign with Sleep Number, is also focusing in on the Rams and their quest to repeat. Last year, Akers shockingly returned from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in July to play in the postseason while leading Los Angeles in carries during its Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

With the Rams trying to become the first repeat champion since the 2003-04 New England Patriots, Akers understands the challenge but believes the right men are in place to do the job.

“Just got the right guys, mentally,” Akers said. “Like you said, beyond being talented, we have the right guys mentally. We have the right leaders in the locker room, we have the right soldiers, foot soldiers as well. … Having that above-the-neck mentality, might give us that edge that other people don’t have.”

Los Angeles starts its 2022 season on Thursday night against the Buffalo Bills, unveiling its Super Bowl banner at SoFi Stadium.
