The Jordan Love era has officially begun with Aaron Rodgers being dealt to the New York Jets. Here are three moves the Packers need to make to help Love.
Back on March 15, quarterback Aaron Rodgers informed the NFL world that he intended to play for the New York Jets. That part was finished. All that was left was for the Jets and Green Bay Packers to agree to terms on a trade. After over a month, just days before the first night of the NFL Draft, the two sides have finally agreed to the terms of a trade.
According to ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Jets acquired Rodgers, the No. 15 overall pick and a 2023 fifth-round pick from the Packers in exchange for the No. 13 overall pick, a 2023 second-round pick, a 2023 sixth-round pick and a conditional 2024 second-round pick that becomes a first if Rodgers plays for 65-percent of the plays. With that, the Packers are now heading into the Jordan Love era.
It was only a matter of time until this day arrived. After all, the team did trade up in the 2020 NFL Draft to select Love to eventually be their quarterback of the future. Not to mention there was that time prior to the 2021 season where Rodgers seemingly wanted out of Green Bay. Love showed promise during his limited playing time through his first three years in the league, and it’ sup to the Pakers to provide him with some help.
Here are three moves the Packers need to make to help out Love in his first year as the team’s starting quarterback.
3 moves Packers should make to kickstart Jordan Love era, No. 3: Sign T.Y. Hilton
The Packers’ wide receiver room is looking a bit barren this offseason. They already lost Allen Lazard to the Jets, where he will team up once again with Rodgers, and Randall Cobb is a free agent. As of now, the Packers’ top wide receivers on the depth chart are Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure, who are all set to enter their second NFL season. The Packers could stand to add an experienced pass-catcher to fill out the depth chart.
The options available in free agency are nothing to really write home about, especially after Odell Beckham Jr. signed with the Baltimore Ravens. But if the Packers want to bring in an option who showed that he can still get behind defenses, T.Y. Hilton could be an option for them to explore.
Hilton is far from the dominant receiver that he was during his prime years with the Indianapolis Colts. But, he did show in his limited time with the Dallas Cowboys last year that he can steal beat defensive backs. Look no further than the team’s Week 16 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, where he ran past cornerback Darius Slay and beat Josiah Scott to make a huge catch to convert on a seemingly impossible third-and-30 play.
In three regular season games with the Cowboys, Hilton caught 7-of-10 targets for 121 yards.
The Packers could stand to bring in a veteran who can be a downfield option for Love to target like Hilton.
