Popular alpine skier Lindsey Vonn made a strong comeback with her impressive victory at the FIS World Cup event held in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The 41-year-old alpine skier became the oldest female skier to achieve back-to-back podium finishes at a World Cup skiing event in a single year.
Vonn later opened up about her brilliant performance at the World Cup event. She revealed how the knee replacement surgery and strong self-belief propelled her powerful comeback at such an age.
Lindsey Vonn Reveals How She Made a Strong Comeback
In her interview with the BBC Sport channel, the alpine skier revealed her thoughts on her impressive victory at St. Moritz. Vonn maintained that this comeback wasn’t what she expected, but it has helped in proving her naysayers wrong. The 41-year-old mentioned,
“I just hope people are inspired to believe in themselves. You know, this comeback was unexpected, but I think I’m also proving a lot of people wrong and changing a lot of people’s expectations about what’s possible at an older age.”
The Olympic champion skier further added in her interview,
“I mean, the only reason I’m able to do this comeback is because I got a partial knee replacement. I think racing Cortina obviously was something that was a little bit of a carrot, you know, on a stick dangling in front of me, and made me more inspired to want to do this comeback.”
Vonn previously finished second in an FIS World Cup event held around March 2025 in Sun Valley, Idaho. The former Olympic champion had become the oldest female skier to achieve this distinction.
Vonn’s Performance at the Winter Olympics
Vonn is now preparing for the much-awaited Winter Olympics, which shall be held in the cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The quadrennial event is scheduled to be held from February 6 to February 22 next year.
Vonn has been participating in the Winter Olympics since 2002. She made her Olympic debut at the 2002 event. However, it was only in 2010 that Vonn tasted success with a gold medal in the downhill event held at the Vancouver edition and a bronze medal in the Super G event.
Vonn further participated in the PyeongChang edition in 2018 after being forced to stay out of the 2014 Sochi edition. The alpine skier clinched a bronze medal in the downhill event before she bid farewell to the sport due to recurring injuries.
However, in November 2024, Vonn announced that she is returning to the sport after undergoing a partial knee replacement surgery. She hopes to make it big this time.
