The 2025 Davis Cup Finals are underway, and Alexander Zverev has made his intentions clear ahead of Germany’s clash with Argentina. The World No. 3 revealed that he hopes to emulate the path carved out by current World No. 2 Jannik Sinner, believing a strong run here could propel him into the 2026 season.
Alexander Zverev Cites Jannik Sinner’s Example As He Looks To Excel at the 2025 Davis Cup Finals
Both Sinner and Zverev recently featured at the 2025 ATP Finals. While the German endured an underwhelming campaign, the Italian delivered a commanding run, cruising to his title defense without dropping a set.
The two even squared off in their second group-stage match, where Zverev never found his rhythm and struggled to threaten the World No. 2. Sinner took the opening set 6–4 with ease and tightened his grip in the second, sealing it 6–3 to strengthen his push for the semifinals.
The Italian then swept past Ben Shelton, Alex de Minaur, and arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz to lift the trophy in Turin. Zverev, meanwhile, closed his campaign with a straight-sets defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime in his final group match.
While the Italian will be absent from his nation’s pursuit of a rare three-peat at the Davis Cup Finals, Zverev steps in as a pivotal figure for Germany. Ahead of the event, the World No. 3 was asked whether a strong showing this week could help generate momentum for the 2026 season.
The German agreed, pointing to Sinner’s trajectory as an example and reaffirming his own goal of delivering a far stronger campaign, especially with the depth and balance in Germany’s lineup. Sinner had been instrumental in Italy’s title runs over the last two editions, and later two standout seasons marked by four Grand Slam titles and an extended spell as World No. 1.
“Well, of course I hope to circle down the path of Jannik and those guys the last couple of years, for sure. I think everybody had a long year. Everybody had a long season. I’m very happy to be with this team. We have a great team. I think we’re all looking forward to competing here. Yeah, to be honest, I think we have great chances in the upcoming matches. Hopefully we can prove that,” he said in his press conference.
Italy, led by Filippo Volandri, will field a lineup featuring Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Berrettini, Andrea Vavassori, and Simone Bolelli. They face Austria in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, November 19.
Germany, captained by Michael Kohlmann, brings a seasoned squad of Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff, Kevin Krawietz, Yannick Hanfmann, and Tim Puetz. They take on Argentina in their quarterfinal on Thursday, November 20.
