John Cena and Randy Orton collided in the main event of Backlash this Saturday for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The match got a positive reaction from the crowd attending the event live, who chanted “this is awesome” several times during the bout. However, many fans are taking to social media to criticize it.
John Cena vs. Randy Orton Match Sparked Outrage Among Fans
Cena and Orton have been causing chaos in the ring for over 25 years now, and recently the two met once again—probably for the last time this Saturday. The Viper, who had the upper hand throughout the last few weeks and most parts of this match, lost due to fallen referees who couldn’t count when he was pinned and the unexpected interference by R-Truth, who saved his childhood hero from getting a punt kick.
The “last real champion” ended the match with a low blow and by hitting the title to his opponent’s head. Cena and Orton put up a great fight, but it wasn’t as thrilling as the old ones. That’s why fans with high expectations are disappointed with it and are showing their frustration on the internet.
One fan wrote: “That was the most overdone match I’ve ever seen in my life.” Replying to this comment, another fan pointed out the flaws: “Ref knocked out 3 times, Aldi comes out for no reason, Truth interfered, and a low blow. This match was absolute garbage and so predictable.”
One user criticized his heel character: “Let’s be real: Cena as a face was stale. Cena as a heel? Somehow worse. All bark, no bite. You gave us a villain… and forgot to give him a purpose. #WWEBacklash.” Another feels tired of the legend and asks him to retire: “Am done with you Cena, go retire already.”
X user @ImHermes_ expressed his dissatisfaction with Cena’s retirement tour after his match against Orton: “Man I’m expecting so much more from this retirement journey. I want John to leave how he started with explosions and energy. I’m just not getting that at the moment.” While another criticizes Cena’s submission lock: “Stfu this such trash. Hey Paul this bull is why Punk left. Propping up this jobber.”
Travis Scott interfered at WrestleMania to help the Cenation leader become the champion, and R-Truth interfered at Backlash to help him retain it. @DKizzy points out these interferences make his farewell tour weak: “Him winning with someone interfering each match just makes his Farwell tour weak sauce.”
Doesn’t matter how, but Cena managed to defend his title against his biggest rival. It will be interesting to see how the champion’s farewell tour unfolds and who he faces next. Considering what happened post-show, it seems his next opponent could be none other than one of his biggest fans—R-Truth.
