Is Damar Hamlin Playing Today? Latest Update on Bills Safety

Damar Hamlin has seen action in three games this season for the Buffalo Bills — all following his horrific cardiac arrest episode one year ago in Cincinnati.

As the one-year anniversary of that scary moment draws near, will Hamlin see action against the Dallas Cowboys, especially with the Bills still in the mix for a postseason bid?

Latest on Damar Hamlin’s Playing Status Ahead of Cowboys Game

The safety has stayed healthy throughout the season. A very positive sign considering what occurred a year ago.

Hamlin has yet to start in a game this season. It’s a big difference compared to the 13 starts he was given last year before getting hit with commotio cordis against the Bengals. However, there are signs that his playing time could increase with the Cowboys in town.

Starting safety Micah Hyde has been dealing with a neck stinger. The Bills listed Hyde as a non-participant during this week of practice, and he was officially ruled out for the game on Friday per head coach Sean McDermott.

Buffalo, however, has another safety option in Taylor Rapp, who was a 2023 offseason pickup from the Los Angeles Rams. Rapp has started in Hyde’s place before — twice already this season. Still, depth comes into play with Hyde a scratch and Hamlin being one of the only other available options.

How Has Hamlin Played This Season?

Again, Hamlin has been limited this season. Nevertheless, Buffalo has been convinced enough to allow him to see the field when called upon.

Hamlin’s been given nine total defensive snaps this season. He’s been targeted once and surrendered a six-yard reception to his side.

Hamlin, though, has seen a bulk of his NFL action this season on special teams. He’s played on four of the six different special-teams units this season.

The Bills have thrown him out there for kickoff coverage and to create running lanes as a blocker through kickoff return. Hamlin is also on the field when Buffalo lines up in a punt formation, and then when the Bills are attempting to field or block a punt.

Hamlin saw playing time against the Miami Dolphins in Week 4, the Denver Broncos in Week 10, and on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 12. The Bills went 1-2 in those games.

Now, with Hyde on the mend, perhaps Hamlin will earn his fourth NFL action this season.
