Two former Green Bay Packers quarterbacks offered some advice for Jordan Love as he takes over for Aaron Rodgers.
Jordan Love has a tough task ahead of him as he takes over for an all-time great. Aaron Rodgers may very well be the best quarterback in franchise history, ahead of even Brett Favre and Bart Starr. Rodgers is surely the most talented.
However, No. 12 is now No. 8 in New York, playing for a new organization in the Jets. The Packers vowed to move on with Love as their starting signal-caller, a player they drafted with their first-round pick in 2020 with the full intent of having the Utah State product take over for Rodgers.
Now, there’s no way Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst could’ve seen Rodgers back-to-back MVPs coming shortly thereafter, but father time eventually came for Rodgers as they do all of the greats.
Packers quarterbacks have advice for Jordan Love
As Love takes on this tremendous challenge, former Packers QBs Lynn Dickey and Don Majkowski offered up some advice, via the Wisconsin State Journal.
Dickey, for one, encouraged Love to let loose and not worry so much about turning the ball over.
“With those interceptions, (then-head coach) Bart Starr would tell me, ‘Hey, don’t worry about throwing the picks. If you don’t throw four touchdowns, we don’t have a prayer of winning anyway,’” Dickey recalled. “And I went, ‘Well, that’s encouraging.’”
Dickey threw 29 interceptions in arguably his best season in 1983, when he led the league in passing and passing touchdowns.
Majkowski, meanwhile, had a more limited experience starting in a strike-laden season for the Packers. However, he remembers what it was like for him as a young quarterback embracing the offense for the first time.
“I remember my rookie year — clearly, clearly remember — and learning the pro offense took everything I had (mentally),” Majkowski said. “I was just happy to be in the huddle and be able to call the play properly, call the formation, get the motion correct, get the snap count right, and know where my first primary receiver was. That was about as much as I knew my rookie year. And if the first guy wasn’t open, I was jetting. I was getting out of the pocket.”
Thankfully, Love is entering his fourth season, so he ought to have a decent understanding based on his limited starting experience.
