Try To Acquire Anthony Richardson, Trevor Lawrence, or Kenny Pickett

The 2023 fantasy football season has already begun, with dynasty managers eagerly preparing for another campaign. As we know, a savvy buy-low trade can transform a merely “good” roster into a league winner. Who are some of the top dynasty QB trade targets for the long term — guys who can help anchor a juggernaut roster for years to come?

Looking for more trade targets at other positions? We have you covered with wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends.

Top Dynasty QB Trade Targets for the 2023 NFL Offseason

If you’re in a Superflex or two-QB dynasty league, the position offers premium value. Landing two top-eight performers can separate you from the pack and even compensate for a struggling RB corps.

But in a one-QB league, managers can find value on waivers throughout the year. Many non-top-12 preseason quarterbacks exceed expectations season after season. Everyone’s looking for the next Patrick Mahomes. Managers who bought low on Josh Allen ahead of 2020 struck gold. And so on.

This year’s rookie class might give us at least four or even five long-term starters. At minimum, three should be mainstay contributors for years. However, with all the QB talent currently in the NFL, it’s hard to know whether any of these rookies can become weekly fantasy starters in 2023, 2024, or even 2025.

Buying low on any player carries risk. Obviously, your opponents think they’re selling high. One of you will be proven correct. “Winning” a trade requires research, foresight, and luck. With that in mind, let’s examine some of the top buy-low dynasty QB trade targets.

Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars

On the one hand, Trevor Lawrence is already post-hype. I was bullish about him in dynasty heading into last season but didn’t have the guts to rank him in the top 10. He possesses the talent and surrounding personnel to become a perennial top-five fantasy QB.

There’s still some rawness to his game. He’s prone to mistakes. And he’s also only 23 years old. In other words, we haven’t come close to seeing the best of Lawrence. His numbers improved dramatically last season, mirroring what we witnessed nearly a quarter century ago during Peyton Manning’s first two campaigns. Lawrence is poised to progress into one of the game’s elites.

Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts

Who cares that he was the No. 3 quarterback taken in the draft? Justin Fields was the No. 4 quarterback drafted in 2021. Justin Herbert was the No. 3 QB in 2020. Josh Allen was the No. 3 QB in 2018. This is the nature of drafting. The right quarterback in the right situation can thrive. The right quarterback in the wrong situation can disappoint.

Arguably, Anthony Richardson is in the best situation of any rookie QB this year. Assuming full health for his key skill players, he’s equipped with one of the game’s best running backs, as well as an above-average WR trio led by Michael Pittman Jr. The Colts have been one “great” QB away from making a serious title run for four years. If Richardson is as good as advertised, then he could be a top-10 QB in Year 1, with plenty of room to ascend.

Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh Steelers

Youth and dynasty go hand-in-hand. In most cases, a 30-year-old QB already has played his best football. There are notable one- or two-year exceptions. But in general, it’s hard to “buy low” on a 30-something quarterback.

Kenny Pickett is a prime example of an off-the-radar fantasy asset. The first quarterback drafted last year, Pickett — like Richardson — is fortunate to be where he is. No one is breathing down his neck for the starting job. He has a strong pass-catching No. 1 RB at his disposal. He has a youthful receiving corps led by Dionate Johnson, George Pickens, and Pat Freiermuth.

Anything Allen Robinson and Calvin Austin III give him will be gravy. Pickett is primed for a Year 2 leap, and with the Steelers’ strong offensive nucleus, it’s quite possible that he’ll become a 3,800-30-10 QB by Year 3. You can get him on the cheap in deep dynasty leagues — unless your opponent is a Steelers fan.
