Who Are the Best Tight Ends To Draft in Dynasty?

In dynasty, you have two goals for tight end. Be elite or find a way to get elite.

You need someone who can consistently produce high-end upside and not live in the “low-end TE1 upside” range. But even then, how should we value guys like Kyle Pitts and Travis Kelce?

Pitts came off a great rookie year but took a massive downturn last season as injuries limited him to 10 games. Yet, the most significant limiting factor was the Falcons’ offense. Pitts saw just 59 targets last year, catching 28 passes for 356 yards with two touchdowns while averaging 7.6 PPR points per game. The addition of Bijan Robinson suggests Arthur Smith wants to stay rushing first, plus Desmond Ridder remains an unknown.

Then you have Kelce, who might very well be the GOAT of TEs. All he does is finish as the TE1 (316.3 PPR), and last year finished a stupid 100.9 PPR points above T.J. Hockenson in second place (215.4 PPR). But when is that age apex going to hit?

It’s the elephant in the room, as Kelce will turn 34 this season. His snaps have consistently gone down in the last few years, but the production is just absurd. Yet, how long this level of play lasts and his dynasty value stays this high remains to be seen.

This offseason, I would be heavily targeting Evan Engram after his surge in performance last season. While he’s playing on the franchise tag, I still see Engram’s future with the Jaguars. Even with Calvin Ridley ready for this year, Engram has a great shot at a top-eight finish in 2023.

I’d also float trades out for Arizona Cardinals TE Trey McBride and Titans TE Chigoziem Okonkwo. McBride was the clear TE1 of last year’s class. After Ertz was lost for the season in Week 10 due to injury, McBride saw an increased role. While he only saw 39 targets in 2022, the upside is there, but it all depends on when Ertz will be ready to go. This is a bet on the future.

Okonkwo, though, is a bet on the present. Take a glance at the Titans’ wide receiver room following the draft. It’s Treylon Burks and then a collection of Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Kyle Philips, Chris Moore, Racey McMath, and other guys who will rarely see the field. Okonkwo is a pure athlete who ran a 4.52 40-yard dash at 6’2″, 243 pounds.

A fourth-round pick in 2022, Okonkwo scored three touchdowns on just 32 receptions and was targeted on 33% of his routes, the third-highest rate for a TE last year. His 10.6% target share is going to be blown out of the water.

In 2019, Mark Andrews was my breakout pick at tight end. In 2020, it was Jonnu Smith. 2021 was Cole Kmet. Last year it was Engram and David Njoku. For 2023, my breakout tight end will be Okonkwo. Buckle up.
