The Chicago Bears mercifully ended the head coaching tenure of Matt Eberflus just one day after the team’s embarrassing 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving.
This marked the first time in 100 years this franchise has fired a coach during a season.
It’s a dishonorable distinction for Eberflus, but reports quickly surfaced after the game detailing just how bad things became in the locker room.
One report mentioned a heated verbal exchange Eberflus had with one team veteran after the loss.
During Jay Glazer’s “Inside Scoop” segment on FOX’s NFL pregame show Sunday morning, Glazer discussed how star cornerback Jaylon Johnson erupted in frustration at Eberflus following the loss, saying Johnson interrupted Eberflus’ postgame speech while discussing how this game was the type of adversity the team needed, and noted that Johnson used some colorful language and went on for 10-15 minutes, which solidified Eberflus officially losing his locker room.

The Bears have lost six in a row since their impressive 4-2 start, and many of their losses have featured maddening late-game execution and decision-making that played a major part in Eberflus’s firing.
With an exciting rookie No. 1 pick at quarterback, plenty of weapons on offense, and a solid defense, this will certainly be a highly-coveted coaching gig in the offseason, and the organization is sure to explore all options.
It’s a good sign that Johnson stood up after the game and showed some veteran leadership.
This indicates that this team should be able to stick together amid all this turmoil and finish the season strong.
