The Chicago Bears spent good money in free agency so far, and one particular signing should have Justin Fields relieved.
When the Chicago Bears announced the signings of linebackers Tremaine Edmunds (WOW) and TJ Edwards, many wondered what they would do for Justin Fields.
Now, that question has been answered as Chicago opted to add a nasty individual to their offensive line in the form of Tennessee Titans guard Nate Davis on a three-year deal.
Talk about an upgrade. No, he’s not the flashy offensive lineman like Mike McGlinchey or Ben Powers, but he’s been a consistent force ever since he was drafted out of Charlotte and became a Day One Starter.
Davis has not only been a good run blocker, ask Derrick Henry, but his pass blocking is strong as well. No question, Fields has to be happy. Not only does have a new weapon in DJ Moore, but he has some help up front in protection.
Nate David helps make life smoother for Justin Fields and the Bears offense
Before we truly go crazy, let’s understand one thing. Nate Davis does not guarantee that the Bears will win the Super Bowl. At the same time, he adds stability to the offensive line and reinforces that the Bears will indeed be looking heavily at trench players in the draft.
Chicago chose to sign Edmunds and Edwards, meaning the linebacker core is set, and at some point, you can expect the team to possibly add another cornerback this offseason and maybe another safety if they want more depth in the backfield.
But the game is won in the trenches, and Chicago, from an outsiders’ perspective, is likely looking to draft and develop their trench players and ultimately pay them, for the most part. That is the right thing to do if they truly stick to that plan. For now, they have a building block for their line, and it’s a very smart move.
