Frances Tiafoe’s Girlfriend Ayan Admits She Didn’t Believe Him About Madrid Open Blackout

The chaos erupted on Monday, Apr. 28, when an unexpected and sweeping power failure plunged large parts of Spain, Portugal, and even regions of France into darkness. In Madrid, life came to a grinding halt as traffic lights flickered off, causing massive jams, and businesses struggled to operate without electricity.

The outage didn’t spare the Madrid Open either. Matches at the famed Caja Mágica were thrown into disarray, with scoreboards going blank and electronic line-calling systems shutting down, forcing officials to suspend several matches mid-play.

Frances Tiafoe’s girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, shared Instagram screenshots of a text exchange with the tennis star during his Madrid Open run, reacting to the shocking power outage in Spain. Currently away on other engagements, Broomfield expressed concern after waking up to Tiafoe’s message:

“Babes our power out. In the whole f*****g country.”

Stunned, she replied:

“Wait what,” as Tiafoe informed her that France and Portugal were also affected. She captioned the post, “Woke up to this message about a widespread power outrage just hit Spain and Portugal.”

In a follow-up Story showing a dark FaceTime screen from Tiafoe’s side, Broomfield admitted:

“I thought he was kidding. He was not. There is Zero power in Madrid, Spain right now. Like PITCH BLACK.”

On the court, Tiafoe, currently seeded 16th at the 2025 Madrid Open and making his fifth appearance at the tournament, has advanced to the third round. He received a second-round walkover against Luciano Darderi, and is set to face France’s Alexandre Muller next, marking their second ATP meeting after Tiafoe’s earlier win in Acapulco this year.

His doubles campaign, however, ended early after he and partner Alejandro Davidovich Fokina fell in the opening round to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Albano Olivetti.
