David Montgomery’s comments on Justin Fields will shift Bears fans perspective

Chicago Bears fans should feel excited following running back David Montgomery’s comments about quarterback Justin Fields.

The Chicago Bears had a new regime to start the 2022 league year, with quarterback Justin Fields as the starter heading into the regular season. While he has not thrown the ball much through the first four games, he did throw for a season-high 208 yards in their game against the rival Minnesota Vikings. The team was close to tying the game, but a late fumble by wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette clinched the 29-22 loss.

During a press conference on Monday, Bears running back David Montgomery spoke highly about Fields’ “poise” and ability to be calm in “hostile situations.” You can read Montgomery’s full quote below, courtesy of NBC Sports Chicago’s Slavko Bekovic.

These comments should only excite Bears fans about the potential of Fields. He did, after all, almost bring the team back to potentially force overtime against their division rivals.

The Bears had trailed the Vikings 21-3 midway through the second quarter, but over a minute before both teams entered their locker rooms, Montgomery rushed or a nine-yard touchdown to cut their deficit to 21-10. That run was set up by a huge 39-yard, one-handed reception by wide receiver Darnell Mooney.

Chicago got the football to start the second half, and Fields led the team on an eight-play drive. The final play was a nine-yard touchdown pass from Fields to wide receiver Velus Jones to cut Minnesota’s lead to 21-16.

The Bears did take a 22-21 lead after 43- and 51-yard field goals by Cairo Santos. But, the Vikings made a late run to go ahead of the Bears, after quarterback Kirk Cousins ran it into the end zone on a one-yard run. Then, Chicago’s late attempt to tie the game ended after cornerback Cameron Dantzler forced a fumble on Smith-Marsette.

Chicago will look to get back in the win column on Thursday night when they face the 1-4 Washington Commanders.
