Shane Steichen Raves About Daniel Jones

The Indianapolis Colts have finally found their quarterback, or so it seems.

They have been searching ever since Andrew Luck shockingly announced his retirement just before the start of the 2019 season.

But that revolving door has stopped, thanks to Daniel Jones, of all people.

Following the Colts’ Week 2 win against the Denver Broncos, head coach Shane Steichen tipped his hat to his new QB.

“I think the consistency that he brings, his preparation, and it’s coming to life on the field on Sundays. He works at it,” Steichen said. “I think he’s doing a really nice job of going through his reads. If the first read is not there, he’s getting to his second, third reads. The offensive line is doing a [heck] of a job for him. I think he’s communicating well with the receivers throughout the week, different looks that could come up, route adjustments, all those different things throughout the course of a week of preparation. Then to see it happen on Sundays has been good, so we’ve got to continue that.”

Jones flashed glimpses of strong play with the New York Giants, and he boasted the arm strength, size and speed to play the position.

However, except for his first year with head coach Brian Daboll, Jones rarely looked like a starting-caliber quarterback.

That speaks volumes about Steichen’s coaching and system.

The Colts have been in playoff contention in his first two seasons, despite relying on underwhelming quarterbacks Gardner Minshew and Anthony Richardson.

They made a big gamble when they signed Jones this offseason.

He had been cut by the Giants and finished last season with the Minnesota Vikingss, and there was no guarantee that he would beat out Richardson for the starting job.

Not only did he do so, but he may have shut the door on any possibility of Richardson reclaiming the job.

The Colts opened the season with 10 consecutive scoring drives, and while “Indiana Jones” still needs to prove himself in high-stakes situations, the early results of this new partnership are promising.
